Obama-Romney discuss outsourcing in final debate |
Call Center Services outsourcing had been the topic of war of words between Obama and Mitt Romney throughout their election campaign. The final debate of October 23 whose primary topic was Foreign Policy, also couldn’t escape a mention of outsourcing. While the Arab Spring, relations with Israel and terrorism were discussed for most part, but outsourcing to China was also dragged into the debate.
Incidentally, India wasn’t mentioned. This is a clear indication that the ire of Americans is not targeted against offshore call center vendors. People are angry about the shutting of manufacturing sector industries in America and the predatory pricing of ‘Made in China’ goods. IT and ITES based outsourcing of service sector has not caused as many job losses, and instead benefitted the American businesses. China has been attributed for causing 2.4 million jobs in the last 8 years in America. These job losses were spread across the various states – with 370,000 in California, 193,700 in Texas, 140,500 in New York, 105,500 in Illinois, 101,600 in Florida, 95,700 in Pennsylvania and other states too. On the other hand, Indian IT and ITES companies have directly created Over 2,80,000 jobs in America.
The local American population has found employment in these offices. And more than 200,000 US nationals are working in these Indian Call Center and BPO firms. This number of jobs created has been doubled in the last five years, which demonstrates that further growth of Indian Call Center and BPO industry will automatically generate more employment in America. India’s contribution to US economy also has been tremendous. The companies have invested amounts more than USD 5 billion by acquisitions of 128 firms of US. So this indicates that outsourcing is not a one-way draining of a nation’s resource, especially when done by two responsible nations. Globalization is inevitable and protectionism has no space in today’s economy. Hopefully the next time outsourcing is discussed by President of America, whoever it is Obama or Mitt Romney, it is done with positive connotations. |
