Australian company penalized for telemarketing calls to DNC |
The biggest blunder that a Telemarketing Call Center can make is to call the numbers which it is prohibited to call. Doing so is not just unethical but also illegal. An Australian Finance Solutions company called the ‘Heritage Financial Solutions’ was found to be violating the norms as it was calling up people with DNC registration numbers.
On discovery of this malpractice, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) which is the statutory authority, swung into action. An investigation was held, after which it was ascertained that the people who had registered in the Do Not Call list of ACMA were also called. After which, Heritage Finance Solutions was forced to pay the monetary fine of $17,000. Such a strict implementation by the authorities has ensured that people with DNC registration have seen a drop of 88% in the quantity of telemarketing calls they receive.
India also has a similar National Do Not Call Registry wherein people who don’t want to receive any tele-marketing calls can register themselves. The Call Centers of India have been mostly compliant of these lists and not many cases of violation of DNC list have been reported here. The outsource call centers operating in the country which deal with mainly offshore clients always insist on lists double-checked for any numbers in the DNC. A lot of telemarketing call centers which perform the job of preparing the database also of potential customers, follow the requisite procedure with due diligence to ensure that no DNC numbers ever get called.
